Our Services in Connecticut
M & J Home Improvement covers the inside and outside of a Connecticut property. Masonry, exterior and interior painting, flooring installation, landscape design and shrub trimming all run through one licensed crew. Every service starts with a free estimate.
Brick, Stone and Concrete Masonry in Connecticut

Masonry is the work that holds a property together: foundations, chimneys, retaining walls, steps, patios and walkways. M & J builds new brick, block, stone and concrete structures and repairs the ones that have started to fail. Connecticut freeze and thaw cycles are hard on mortar.
Every masonry job starts with finding out why the failure happened. Water, settling and poor drainage cause most cracked walls and loose joints. Fixing the cause first is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that returns.
What’s Included
- Brick, block and natural stone installation
- Retaining walls and garden walls
- Chimney repair, rebuilding and repointing

Exterior House Painting in Connecticut

Exterior paint is the barrier between your siding and the weather. M & J prepares, primes and coats wood, vinyl, aluminum and fiber cement siding. Trim, soffits, fascia, porches, decks and garage doors are covered too. Preparation takes longer than the painting itself.
Scraping, sanding, washing, caulking and wood rot repair all happen before the first coat. Work is scheduled around the forecast so coatings cure at the right temperature. Coating a dirty or damp surface guarantees early failure.

Interior Painting and Finishing in Connecticut
Interior painting covers walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, cabinets and stairwells. M & J handles single rooms and whole house repaints. That includes the prep work before a Connecticut home goes on the market. Clean lines and even coverage are the entire job.
Drywall patching, sanding, caulking and spot priming come before any finish coat. Furniture is moved or covered, floors are protected, and outlet and switch plates come off. The room is put back together at the end.

Hardwood, Vinyl and Tile Flooring in Connecticut

Flooring installation covers hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, luxury vinyl plank and ceramic or porcelain tile. M & J installs in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, bedrooms and full floors. The right material depends on moisture, traffic and what sits underneath the existing floor.
Subfloor condition decides how the finished floor looks and how long it lasts. Uneven or damp subfloors are leveled and sealed before installation begins. Transitions, thresholds, quarter round and baseboard trim are part of the job.

Landscape Design and Yard Work in Connecticut

Landscape design turns an unfinished yard into a plan you can actually maintain. M & J lays out planting beds, walkways, stone borders, lawn areas and grading, then installs the whole thing. Plant selection is matched to Connecticut hardiness zones and sun exposure.
Drainage comes before planting. Water that pools against a foundation or washes out a bed will undo the design in one season. Grading, edging and bed preparation are handled before anything goes in the ground.

Shrub and Hedge Trimming in Connecticut
Shrub trimming keeps foundation plantings, hedges and ornamental bushes at the size and shape they were meant to hold. Overgrown shrubs block windows, trap moisture against siding and hide the front of the house. M & J cuts them back without damaging the plant.
Timing matters more than most homeowners expect. Flowering shrubs pruned at the wrong point in the season will not bloom the following year. Cuts are made at the right time and at the right growth points.
Hedge Trimming
Hedges shaped and cut back to hold clean, even form.
Foundation Shrubs
Pulled back off siding to prevent trapped moisture damage.
Ornamentals
Flowering shrubs pruned at the right time in the season.
Cleanup Included
Trimmings hauled away, beds raked out before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Connecticut homeowners about masonry, painting, flooring and the way M & J runs a project.
General
Cost depends on scope, materials and the condition of what is already there. Every estimate is free and written out before work begins, so there are no vague numbers. Masonry, painting, flooring and landscape work each price differently. Milton walks the job in person and quotes it clearly.
Yes. Every estimate is free and comes with no obligation. Milton comes to the property, looks at the job in person, and provides a written estimate you can review at your own pace. No pressure and no charge to have him out.
Timeline depends on the service. A single room repaint runs two to four days. A full exterior repaint or a masonry repair job usually takes one to two weeks. Whole property landscape or full house flooring takes longer. A firm schedule is included in the estimate.
Yes. M & J Home Improvement carries a Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor license and full liability and workers compensation insurance. Both are current on every job. Proof of insurance and license number are available on request before work starts.
Workmanship on every installation is backed by M & J directly. Materials carry manufacturer warranties, which vary by product. Specific warranty terms are written into the estimate for each project so nothing is left unclear.
Masonry
Water is the main cause. Freeze and thaw cycles push loose mortar apart, poor drainage saturates the base of walls, and settling shifts the load path. Repairing the cracks without addressing the cause guarantees the problem returns. Every masonry job starts with finding out why it failed.
Most Connecticut chimneys need repointing every 25 to 40 years. Signs to watch: crumbling mortar between bricks, loose bricks, water stains on the interior wall behind the chimney and rust on the flashing. Repointing is far less expensive than a full rebuild if caught early.
Exterior Painting
Quality paint on properly prepped siding lasts eight to twelve years in Connecticut. Trim, porches and decks take more weather and typically hold for six to eight years. Preparation quality matters more than the paint brand. A skipped prep step is what shortens the life.
Late spring through early fall is the window. Ideal conditions are temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees, low humidity and no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours. Coating a wet or cold surface causes early failure. Work is scheduled around the weather, not against it.
Interior Painting
A single room runs one to two days. A whole floor takes four to seven days. Full house repaints usually finish in one to two weeks. What determines the timeline is prep, not square footage. Patching, sanding and priming take longer than the finish coats.
The M & J crew handles small furniture, art and outlet plates. Very large or fragile pieces are best moved by you before we arrive, since we do not want to be responsible for damage on your grandmother’s dresser. Everything that stays in the room is covered and floors are protected.
Flooring
A single room takes one to two days. A whole floor takes three to five days. Full house flooring runs one to two weeks. Subfloor condition changes the timeline more than the material. Uneven or damp subfloors need leveling and sealing before the new floor goes down.
Luxury vinyl plank is the honest answer for most basements. It is waterproof, handles the moisture that comes off a concrete slab, and installs directly over most subfloors. Ceramic tile also works well. Hardwood and laminate are not recommended below grade in Connecticut.
